Some people think of bamboo basket bags as a traditional accessory, while others see them as a fashion item.
They are so versatile and can be used by anyone all year round, whatever their style!

Production Process

竹籠バッグができるまで

Kisetsu’s bamboo bags are created from two bamboo baskets joined together.
These bamboo baskets cannot be made by machine.
The entire process is manual, starting with the preparation of the materials to be used for each basket.
1.‘Takewari’ (Dividing)

Divide the ‘marutake’ (round bamboo). Bamboo pieces are cut up to the required length and divided in half lengthways.

2.‘Hegi’ (Splitting)

Split the bamboo between outer layer and inner core to the appropriate width. Only the outer layer is used for bamboo basket making.

3.‘Habahiki’ (Trimming width)

Trim the strips to ensure they are all of uniform width.

4.‘Mentori’ (Chamfering)

Chamfer the edges of the strips to make them smooth.

5.‘Urasuki’ (Shaving)

The backs of the strips are frayed after splitting, so they are shaved down with a knife.

6.‘Senshoku’ (Coloring)

Color the strips with dye.

7.‘Takeami’ (Weaving)

Weave together to create the basket.

8.‘Himage’ (Heat bending)

Heat and bend the bamboo used for the rim of the basket bag.

9.‘To-kagari’ (Rattan stitching)

Stitch round the edges of the basket bag with strips of rattan.

10.‘Urushi-nuri’ (Lacquering)

Paint lacquer with natural resin 'Urushi' and cure repeatedly (about three times).

11.‘Kumiage’ (Assembling the basket/bag)

Finish weaving two bamboo baskets that are the same respective size and shape without any gaps.

12.‘Ro-migaki’ (wax brushing)

Polish with ibota wax (insect wax) to add gloss and prevent the bamboo from splitting.
